Charged. Convicted. Sentenced to Death. Innocent. The story of the first death row inmate exonerated by DNA.

BLOODSWORTH - An Innocent Man is a documentary memoir recounting Kirk Noble Bloodsworth's remarkable journey through the criminal justice system. An innocent man convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, Kirk became the first death row inmate exonerated by DNA evidence in the United States.

Set against the backdrop of his current battle to repeal the death penalty in the State that sentenced him to death, BLOODSWORTH - An Innocent Man offers an intimate glimpse into what it is to wake to a living nightmare; an innocent man caught in the perfect storm of injustice.

Many times, when we see a face flash across the news screen followed by the word “suspect,” we assume guilt. This tendency is encapsulated in something an ex-NYC police officer said to me at one of Kirk’s speeches; he never really worried about having the right guy or not because, “If they didn’t do this thing, they likely had done something else, otherwise they wouldn’t be in this situation.” That’s a haunting statement that echoes the indifference that is all too prevelant in our modern society. We tend to not think past the headlines, or truly consider the lives that are altered by crime, much less those innocent victims like Kirk who get swept up in the criminal justice system through no fault of their own. These kinds of things happen to other people.

This is the film about the person it happened to. It is my hope that in telling Kirk’s story and inviting the audience to walk a mile in Kirk’s shoes we can, at the very least, shed a light on this indifference enough to give us pause the next time we are faced with a rush to judgement.
