The Animated Mind of Oliver Sacks is a feature-length documentary film that takes us inside the mind of the man who revolutionized the way we think about the human brain: world-renowned author and neurologist Oliver Sacks, M.D.


Animation, found footage, archival material and cinematic live action weave together with on-camera interviews to tell the story of Oliver’s boundless pursuit for understanding and connection to people, patients, and the biological world.


Filmmaker Dempsey Rice builds a stunning visual world that brings to life Oliver’s powerful stories, ultimately inspiring in each of us an irrepressible enthusiasm for, and curiosity about, the human mind.


Dempsey Rice - Director Producer

Dempsey Rice explores themes of connection, personal story, relationship and identity in her filmmaking. Her feature documentary film Daughter of Suicide (1999, HBO) received a Cine Golden Eagle, a National Council on Family Relations Media Award and a National Mental Health Association Media Award. She is the recipient of a NY Emmy as the Series Producer of IMNY. Her hyper-local project, The Listening Project: Brooklyn (2013, 133 short films) aired on Brooklyn Independent Television.

Lori Cheatle - Producer

Lori Cheatle founded Hard Working Movies, based in Brooklyn, NY, that produces award-winning films that are bold, creative and entertaining, focusing on high-profile, documentary features and series. Recent titles include MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A., winner of a Special Jury award at Sundance 2018; I Am Another You by Nanfu Wang; KIKI, directed by Sara Jordeno (IFC Films); CAPTIVATED The Trials of Pamela Smart, directed by Jeremiah Zagar (HBO, Sky Atlantic), 112 Weddings (HBO, BBC, Dogwoof), many others.

Kate Edgar - Executive Producer

Kate Edgar began working for Oliver Sacks in 1983. For more than three decades, she collaborated with him as editor, researcher, assistant and friend. Kate became the Executive Director of the Oliver Sacks Foundation following his death in 2015. Her role is Executive Producer indicates institutional support for The Animated Mind of Oliver Sacks.

Jonathan Corbiere - Director of Animation

Jonathon is a Creative Director/Co-Founder of Thought Café and is educated in graphic design, film and visual effects. He has taught Masters students in the Digital Media graduate program at UBC/Emily Carr and has over 6 years of managing creatives in a studio environment. Through serving in the Canadian Forces as well as founding various start-ups Jonathon is a natural leader. During his early years of freelance work in the film, television and advertising industry, Jonathon realized that communicators have an inherent responsibility to spread important and relevant knowledge with their mediums. He co-founded Thought Café on the simple idea that he could help pave space in the industry for like-minded creatives, who too wished to work on socially relevant projects.

Joanne Nerenberg - Co-Producer

Joanne works on all aspects of documentary film as a producer, director and editor. She is the co-creator of move it! A dance TV show for kids sold to Sesame Workshop in 2003. Joanne has produced video for Harvard University, The New York Historical Society, The Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and The Lincoln Institute in Cambridge, MA. She is currently producing a new documentary film by Lizzie Gottlieb, featuring writer Robert Caro and his legendary editor Bob Gottlieb.
