LOGLINE

A short documentary about RnB singer Margie Joseph who made incredible but forgotten recordings with top musicians and producers. Is creative success alone enough?

SYNOPSIS

Margie Joseph was a promising singer in the mid-70s, starting on Stax Records and then working with producer Arif Marden. She was in the right places with the right people, but is mostly forgotten. This film will examine her work and explore the value of art with or without commercial success.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Director’s note: Margie’s voice is incredible. I listen to her music on a regular basis and will never tire of her songs. I know what I hear in her music, and I want to know Margie the person. I'm interested in the question of whether or not great creative accomplishment is enough because I wonder about that in my own work. This project is personal for me. -Jon Mallow Note: The working title is taken from the title of Margie's early Stax album of the same name.
