As Donald Trump calls for building walls, a unique pro baseball team is defiantly knocking them down.

While Donald Trump takes power on promises to build a massive border wall, a pro baseball team has begun playing home games on both sides of the Rio Grande. The world's only binational sports team refuses to let any walls break decades of shared cultural, economic and familial ties.

I’ve spent the past 25 years reporting on issues related to immigration, the border, and the US-led war on drugs, while both living and working across Latin America. This moment we’re now in, in which a US president is trying to drive a literal and figurative wall through centuries of communal history, brings many themes of my work together into a pivotal, historic moment. The sheer volume of daily reports coming from the Mexican border and factual coverage coming from news organizations each day often just flicks at the people most impacted by the current crisis and fails to tell their personal stories. Instead flooding the public with abstract data, policy and politics, this documentary will offer a flesh-and-blood alternative: A character-driven narrative that will cut through the cacophony of this daily churn of news and commentary to connect with viewers at a visceral and emotional level. Its focus: a team whose identity is defined by its binationality. The fact that it’s a team of Mexican and American players joined in what’s somewhat anachronistically known as “America’s pastime” makes Los Tecos a parable for the interconnectedness Mexico and the US, particularly at the border. And the timing is ripe. The best way to counter demagoguery being spewed from the largest bully pulpit in the world is through an intimate and character-driven story that shows, warts and all, the complicated but true relationship between two longstanding neighbors.
