LOGLINE

A chronicle of the private and public life of Valerie Sassyfras, a pop zydeco fixture in New Orleans.

SYNOPSIS

Valerie Sassyfras is a self-taught musician who’s actualizing her late husband’s dying wish by perpetually performing—whether it’s practicing her songs daily, singing at a birthday party, or entertaining at a retirement home. Her nonstop energy can be daunting, and yet it’s precisely one of the many qualities that’s allowed her a cult following. Now she’s ready for the rest of the world to pay attention.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

We’re willing to disclose everything, but taking into account the 500-word limit of this section, let’s sum it up as succinctly as possible: A woman works.  We could take a more titillating route and reduce the visual to a handful of tidbits, as below: A senior citizen pop star, the city of New Orleans with all its charm and complicated history, a lost love, a family saga—these are the makings of a telenovela. Yet these forces are only interesting to us in the way they shape our principal character. She is the focus.
